My 2021 Pre-Order Wishlist

There are so many amazing books coming out in 2021, and I’ve been keeping track of a list of some of my most anticipated ones since about October last year. I’ve doing a video and a few posts talking about different ones I’m anticipating for different reasons, but today I’m here to show you the little list of ones I’ve pre-ordered, or will be pre-ordering. So let’s jump into it.

Chain of Iron by Cassandra Clare

Of course, I had to go ahead and pre-order this one considering it’s one of my most anticipated releases for the year. I probably don’t really need to go into detail as to why I’m so eagerly anticipating this one, but basically, this has the possibility of becoming one of my favourite Shadowhunters series. Right now, my favourite is The Dark Artifices, followed by The Infernal Devices, but I love the characters in here so much that there’s a chance it might overtake those two yet. All that being said, I’m also terrified for this because I know that this is the book in which everything goes terribly wrong so that it can all get fixed in the final book. I am ready to be ruined like that? I guess we’ll find out. Spoilers: the answer is almost definitely a no.

The Mask Falling by Samantha Shannon

Again, this was one I absolutely had to pre-order. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this one for years. Though, I have to admit that I haven’t read the third one yet. I always said I would wait until this one was announced as the series was a little up in the air for a while there. I had it my mind that this wasn’t out until March, and it was only literally two minutes ago while I was reading this book that I discovered it was released yesterday (which is about a week away from the actual time of writing). I guess I’ll be picking this one up a lot sooner than I expected. This does kind of throw a spanner in my plans for rereading the series–I just picked up book one and was planning to pick up books two and three in February to be ready for March, but I guess now I can just marathon the whole series instead.

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

I haven’t organised my pre-order for this one yet, mostly because it comes out in September and I’m not sure if I’ll be moving in July. But once I’ve sort of worked things out and it’s a little closer to the date, I’ll definitely be organising this. It also doesn’t have a cover yet.

The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo

This is a very new addition to this list. Earlier this month, I read two books for Nghi Vo’s The Singing Hills Cycle and really enjoyed them, so this instantly got bumped up the list. As you may have heard, The Great Gatsby went out of copyright this year and this is the first of the retellings I’m going to end up reading. This one particularly interests me because it doesn’t follow Gatsby or Nick, but rather Jordan Baker. On top of that, it just has everything—it’s fantasy, it has both queer and Asian rep, and obviously, an absolutely stunning cover too. I know that this story is going to be in safe hands with Vo, which makes it even easier to get excited about this one. Here’s hoping it ends up being one of my favourites for the year like I’m anticipating it will be.

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston

Is it really a list for 2021 if Casey McQuiston’s sophomore novel isn’t mentioned? I know a lot of people are excited about this one too, so I made sure to pre-order it so I wouldn’t miss out. I’ve been excited for it ever since it was first mentioned, which happened to be only a few weeks after I read Red, White and Royal Blue with Angel. I’m so glad that we’re finally going to get. All the early reviews I’ve seen for it have been giving it high praise and I’ve seen a few people say it’s even sexier than RW&RB and I am so here for it. I can reveal that Angel and I will be doing one of our discussions for this once it’s been released, and coincidentally, my next post is our discussion of The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski.

I’m almost positive this list will grow throughout the year, so be prepared for an updated version of this later in the year. But for now, what are some of books you’re preordering?
