With the Goodreads Choice Awards winners due to be announced in a few days, I thought it would be a good time to share what I voted for and what I’ve still got waiting on my TBR.
I want to preface this by saying I don’t vote for books I haven’t read. So if there was nothing I’d read in a category, I didn’t vote in it. That means I only made three votes this year, but let’s get into them.
Mystery & Thriller
I don’t usually vote in this category, but I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai was nominated and that’s one of my favourite books of the year, so clearly I had to vote for it. There is a mystery element to this, but honestly, I would’ve categorised it as fiction myself. Anyway, I’m not caught up on the Thursday Murder Club series and I won’t read any of the others, so this was a really easy vote.
Romance

I hadn’t actually read any of the nominated books when the first round came out, but then my library copy of Love, Theoretically came in and I finished off reading Wildfire. If you saw my review of LT, it probably won’t surprise you that I instead voted for Wildfire. I just want to clarify I didn’t vote for Wildfire only out of spite—I really enjoyed reading it, but my response to LT just made my vote so much easier.
YA Fiction
This was an easy vote as well. I read Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute early in the year and I was listening to the audio of Warrior Girl Unearthed. I’d made it about 35% into WGU and I’d already decided that was the clear winner for me. Angeline Boulley is fantastic and I know she’s up against some fan favourites, but I really think she deserves to win.
What’s Still On My TBR
I made a list of all the nominees from the first round that I was interested in reading only for most of them to not make the final round. I have three left on my TBR now so let’s talk about them.
Nonfiction

I think there are a few on this list that I might consider one day, but the one that really stood out for me was On Our Best Behavior by Elise Loehnen. This is about the seven deadly sins and how the idea of them still affects women today. This is very much up my alley and I immediately put it on hold at the library, but I’ve still got about 4 weeks wait.
Fantasy
I had five books on my list originally and only one of them made it through to the top 10. That one is Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo. I’ve talked about rereading Ninth House this month so maybe I’ll even be able to read this one this month too.
YA SFF
There are a few on here again that I might pick up, but the only one I’m sure about is Chain of Thorns. I’m trying to finish Chain of Iron this month so I can finally get around to this but we’ll see how I go.
Romantasy
I also just wanted to briefly talk about the new category, romantasy. I was so glad to see this added this year as I always felt like the romance category was dominated by contemporary romance. Unfortunately, I really wasn’t that interested in any of the nominees. I hadn’t any of the nominees and quite a few of them are later books in series that I will probably never catch up with. Anyway, I do hope they continue the category even if this year was a bust for me.
