Earl Grey Books

Last year I decided to cancel my subscription of Scribd, but I recently made the decision to get it back and so far, I’m really enjoying having access to it again. So today I thought I’d share with you the audiobooks I’m listening to, or hope to listen to in the near future.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

This is the main audiobook I’m listening to at the moment, and I’m enjoying it. I’m only about 10% of the way through so I can’t really comment on much yet in terms of the story itself, but I really love the narrator so far. Like I just said, I’m usually pretty terrible with audiobooks but I’m finding that this one works for me as the book has a few instances of different languages and names that I wouldn’t know how to pronounce without listening to someone say it. So that aspect of it is great, my only ‘complaint’ right now is that the chapters are all around the 45-minute mark so I have to split it into smaller parts to fit my schedule. I just wish I had more time for this right now, but I’ll definitely be sharing my thoughts with you all once I’ve finished it—I’m hoping I can do that before the end of this month!

The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien

I’ve also already started listening to The Hobbit, which by the way, is somehow a good three hours shorter than Cemetery Boys. I don’t know, that seems kind of fake? Anyway, I was meaning to rereading the whole Lord of the Rings sometime this year so when I saw the audiobook on Scribd I jumped on the chance. They have the ones read by Andy Serkis and I find his voice very relaxing and well-suited to the story so far. I haven’t read The Hobbit since 2012 (compared to the others which were 2018-2019), so it feels like a real treat to go back into this book. I noticed that there seems to be quite a few of Tolkien’s books available as audiobooks on Scribd which makes me very happy because that was kind of the entire purpose of me reading the series—to move onto some of his other works. I have plans to talk about my experience of this one in a post in a few weeks time, so if you’re interested in that, keep an eye out!

Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin

I was so happy to see this one available on Scribd because I’d been really struggling to read it as a physical book. I loved the first book and was so incredibly pumped for this one, and then I just couldn’t get into it at all. It’s been waiting on my shelves now since last October. However, both this and Serpent & Dove are available so I’ll probably go back and listen to that first one before moving onto this. I think this is just one of those series that needs to be read in quick succession in order to be enjoyed, so that’s the plan. With that being said, this might be one that I end up waiting for the third book to be released or close to so that I don’t end up having to do the same thing all over again with that one. It seems like that one actually might be released in July, so I really wouldn’t have long to wait if I decide to do it that way. Either way, I’ll be glad to get this one off my physical TBR finally!

Notes to Self by Emilie Pine

This one has been on my list for a while. I cannot remember now who recommended this to me originally but it still sounds like a beautiful read. I think essay collections like this can be quite hard to describe so instead, I’m going to share with you a little blurb from Goodreads—’Emilie Pine speaks to the business of living as a woman in the 21st century – its extraordinary pain and its extraordinary joy. Courageous, humane and uncompromising, she writes with radical honesty on birth and death, on the grief of infertility, on caring for her alcoholic father, on taboos around female bodies and female pain, on sexual violence and violence against the self.’ There’s also a little review from Anne Enright who says not to read this in public because it will make you cry and well honestly, that sounds exactly like my kind of book. This also isn’t too long with it just being 5 hours, so it might be a nice one to break up some of these longer ones with.

Act Like It by Lucy Parker

You’re probably all sick of hearing me mention how contemporary romance isn’t my thing. But recently I have some really good luck in finding ones that I’ve really enjoyed and it’s convinced me to give a few more a try. This one has been on my radar for quite a few years, though again I have no idea who recommended this to me originally. It is definitely outside of my comfort zone, even within contemporary romance—I’m not usually into the actor, musician storyline thing but this sounds kind of cute and I might as well give it a go while it’s available on Scribd, right?
