Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s prompt is a Halloween freebie. I’m a huge scaredy-cat, so I thought I’d come through with some recommendations for everyone else out there who is the same. So here we are!
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Is there anything creepier than being invited to a private island with a bunch of strangers only to be killed off one by one? Tough it definitely sounds creepy, because this is Agatha Christie it’s not gruesome or overly violent at times. This is definitely for readers who like a bit of a creepy atmosphere and a bit of a mystery without the scary bits.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
I think a lot of people who have never read Frankenstein get the wrong idea about it. The movies and pop culture depict something extremely different from the book Mary Shelley actually wrote. Like And Then There Were None, this is definitely more about a creepy atmosphere and the horror of humanity rather than anything overly horror-esque.
Desperate Measures by Katee Robert
Maybe you want a little bit of a sexy Halloween, well Katee Robert’s Wicked Villains series is perfect for that. These are all romance retellings of different Disney villains. Be warned; this is not a light romance by any means so if you’re someone that isn’t into smut, just skip right past this one.
Pestilence by Laura Thalassa
Same with this one. Pestilence is the first book in the Four Horsemen series, and it’s about the Four Horsemen of the apocalypse. Again, it’s quite sexy and extremely dark so give this one a pass if that isn’t your thing. But if it is, it’s so worth the read.
These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
A Romeo and Juliet retelling doesn’t necessarily scream Halloween…until you add a sea monster. These Violent Delights is set in 1920s Shanghai, there are gangs, there is of course the whole forbidden love thing, and yes, there is a sea monster. Highly recommend giving this one a read.
What non-scary books would you recommend for Halloween?
Agreed. Frankenstein isn’t really scary at all to read.

I did the same for TTT today, fall and spooky season books that aren’t scary even to me. Scaredy cats unite! https://susanlynknits.com/2021/10/26/top-ten-tuesday-freebie-ten-spooky-season-books-for-those-of-us-who-hate-to-be-scared/

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is a great pick. It’s creepy without being graphic or terrifying. There’s a reason it’s such a classic!

The only book on our list that I’ve read is And Then There Were None. It’s such a great read; there’s no gore but a certain about of terror as you read. But as a fellow scardey cat, it’s easy to digest!
