SpookoplAthon TBR

SpookoplAthon is this year’s spooky version of Bookopoly—a reaction hosted by Becca and the Books around her TBR game. I’ll link Becca’s announcement video here if you’d like to see more about it.

Today is my TBR for the readathon. I went for the very low effort version of setting things up by just using the digital version of the board and two d6s. I went for six rolls but I’ll roll for more if I end up reading 4/5 of these before the middle of October. But for now, let’s talk about what I got.

Orange

I was so annoyed that this was my first prompt because I couldn’t think of a single book I owned with a mostly orange cover. Of course, when I looked, I had five or six options and this became one of my easier prompts. I decided to choose White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout—it’s one I’ve wanted to reread for years to decide if I want to continue the series, so it’s finally time.

Are we out of the woods yet?

I love a Taylor Swift prompt, especially since this will cross over with the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) reading challenge. The prompts are slightly different—Becca says this can include books with trees on the cover, set in the woods or a rural setting, and T.K’s is about outdoor activity (hiking, camping etc.). I decided to pick In The Shadow of the Mountain by Silvia Vasquez-Lavado which is a memoir about climbing Mount Everest which I think ticks off both prompts nicely.

Black cat

This is meant to be a book with a cat on the cover or as a main part of the story. I don’t have anything like that and I don’t read animal-related books. I do, however, have a fully black cat for the first time in my life so I thought I’d make good use of him. I knew he wouldn’t go near books because he’s still terrified of most things, but he loves paper. So I took four books from various TBRs I’ve posted lately and wrote them out and then I just had to wait for him to come and sniff one. He picked The Bridge Kingdom which is on my Spring TBR, so thank you Arthur!

Community shelf

Next was a community shelf card. These are cards we create our own prompts for and the one I picked out was middle-grade. Honestly, I couldn’t have hoped for a better card. It gives me the perfect opportunity to pick up Malamander by Thomas Taylor, which is also on my Spring TBR. I’ve been meaning to reread this for years and I’m determined that it’ll be this month.

Lowest rated

This one is always a bit nerve-wracking. It took me a little while to weed out the books I’d unhauled, but I finally got The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe as my lowest rated. I bought this book because of Northanger Abbey and I’m honestly not upset at getting this one. It feels like a really good pick for October.

Purple

Last but not least for now is purple. I had a few options for this one as well but I decided to go with Taken at the Flood by Agatha Christie. The plan is to use the last few days of September to read the book before this one in the Poirot series and then get to this one soon after that.

And that’s everything I’ve picked out so far. As I said, I might do some more rolls depending on how I do with the rest of these. Are you joining in this month? What’s on your October TBR otherwise?
