September Reading Wrap-Up, Life Update and More

I’ve got to admit that I’m super excited for it to be October. There are some big changes coming in early 2024 and I’m ready to move on to better things. But first, we have to make it through this last few months and so today I’m wrapping up September.

I’m still playing around with the format of these posts since I only started them last month. If you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them. But for now, let’s get into it.

Reading Wrap Up

I read 15 books in September, including one reread (These Violent Delights) and two DNFs (The Savage and the Swan and Great Circle). I enjoyed most of these, but my favourites were definitely Parable of the Sower and Little Fire.

In my August wrap-up I mentioned I was doing a challenge alongside my bestie, Angel, where we just read from our shelves for the most part. Out of these 15, only two of them were eBooks so I’d say the challenge was a success for sure. Counting all these that I read, 11 that I unhauled and two that I bought—I got my TBR down to 293 this month. That’s the lowest it’s been since November of 2021, but more on that on Tuesday.

Life Update

This month started on a really high note. It was my partner’s birthday and we just had a really fantastic weekend. Unfortunately, by that Monday things had gone downhill very fast. My insulin pump malfunctioned overnight sending me into hospital. Being in hospital for my diabetes is nothing new for me but this was a particularly awful experience as very few of the doctors or nurses had any idea how a pump worked. It was stressful but my actual diabetes team are fantastic and have been keeping a close eye on me ever since.

We took a little day trip down to the coast the weekend after just to brighten our spirits a bit and that was lovely as well. Otherwise my time has mostly been dedicated to writing essays as my semester finishes in two weeks, and knitting more cat blankets. I overbooked myself with appointments towards the end of the month and ended up getting a bit sick with a cold. I’m hoping I’ll feel better in a few days.

TV and Movies

I’ve decided to add my TV and movie wrap-ups into these posts as well rather than keeping them seperate. I don’t make a lot of time for watching things these days, but I did introduce my partner to Buffy the Vampire Slayer—we only watched the first two episodes so he hasn’t made up his mind about it yet. Otherwise I only watched two films for class—What We Do In The Shadows and Hellboy, both of which I really enjoyed.

Current Reads

I’ve got two reads on the go at the moment, as well as my next two reads picked out.

The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe

This is one of my picks for Spookoplathon in October but I started it a few days early since it’s 600+ page book and it’s been a while since I read a classic. I only made it a twenty pages in because I read the introduction first, but I’m hoping it won’t take me all month to read.

Blade and Rose (Blade and Rose #1) by Miranda Honfleur

I couldn’t tell you why but my brain thought starting this 770 page book at the same time as Udolpho would be a great idea. I’ve been excited to read this since I picked up the special editions at BABE. The special editions are so huge that I’ve been reading the eBook version and just moving my bookmark along after I’ve finished a section. I’m reading it pretty slowly as well but I think I’ll probably finish it about halfway through the month.

Next Reads

Since I do have a specific TBR this month from Spookoplathon and because I want to be able to do more rolls, I’m really focusing on those books at the moment. I’ve been waiting for the first to roll around so that I can pick up Malamander by Thomas Taylor and hopefully take that one off my list immediately. I’m also really needing to pick up The Labours of Hercules by Agatha Christie which I didn’t get around to in September. I’m reading the next book in the series for the readathon, so obviously I need to mark this one off first. I think I’ll finish both of these by the end of the week and then I can move onto something else.

And that was September. What did you get done last month? What are your plans for October?
