2026 Reading Goals and Challenges

It’s almost the end of 2025 which means it’s time to start thinking about goals for next year. I was surprisingly prepared this year and I’ve made most of my goals already, including my reading ones which I’m going to share with you today.

I like to reassess and change my goals throughout the year, but these are my plans for at least the first few months of the year.

Read 55 Books

I decided to stick with the same goal from this year and went with 55 books as my reading goal. I’ve been saying this a lot lately but I’m just not reading as much as I used to. I know 55 is still a pretty high number but I’m taking into account the books I’ll might read for the research project I have (more about that here).

Read all the YA off my shelves

YA used to be my favourite area to read from, but these days I’m lucky if I pick up a single YA book within a year. I’ve still got a bunch of stragglers on my shelves and so in 2026, my aim is to clear them off my shelves.

I’m not saying I’ll never buy or read YA again. There are specific authors I will buy from again, but on a whole it’s not something I reach for anymore and these books are taking up much-needed space on my shelves, which leads me to my final goal.

Downsize my TBR to fit double-stacked shelves

Currently my TBR shelves are triple-stacked in places to be able to fit everything I have. I don’t want that to be the case for 2026. I have the IKEA Callax shelves so double stacking means I can still see everything I have without having to pull everything out.

I did a super quick count and right now I’d have to read or unhaul 90 books to make this happen. That’s obviously quite a bit more than my 55 book reading goal, but there’s also different book sizes to take into account. Reading one 500-600 page book will mean I can slot several books into its spot and so forth. Is this doable? I guess we’ll find out.

What are your reading goals and challenges for 2026? How did you 2025 goals go?

  1. I love how realistic your goals are! I’m never one to try and beat my previous year’s goals. I don’t need to stress myself out 😅

I think goals are great but I don’t want it to feel like a chore I have to complete. I am sticking with my 100 book goal because I know I can reach that. My main focus is to try and blog more. I miss it so much and I miss the community!

  2. I’m in a similar position with the YA books on my shelf. Luckily they’re mostly read and I’ve donated or gifted most of the ones that I don’t want anymore, but there are a couple stragglers that need reading and I’m only getting to one or two YA books a year – and not necessarily the ones already on my TBR – I should take some inspiration from you.
