Today is a little bit of a hodgepodge of a post. I’m just here to share a couple of random thoughts I’ve had while reading lately. So, here they are!
What is it with fantasy and spidery creatures?
I have to be honest, I’ve been thinking about this for years. I kind of have a fear of spiders—I’m Australian, we’ve got some pretty huge, gross ones. But so many fantasy books have spider-like creatures in them. Think, Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa, The Lord of the Rings, even The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi where one of the characters has a literal pet tarantula. Can we please just end this trend already?
Am I just not meant to be re-reader?
Sticking with Shadow of the Fox here for a minute. I picked it up the other day with the purpose of rereading it so I could continue the series. I absolutely loved it the first time around, but this time it felt like a real struggle. I made it about ten pages in before I started questioning whether or not I should just not continue.
Are classics for me anymore?
By the same token, I’ve been struggling with classics lately. Once upon a time, I loved reading classics. I definitely still have a few favourites: the works of Anne & Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, Mary Shelley etc. But the last couple I’ve tried to read have been complete disasters. Have I grown out of my desire to read classics for now?
