More WIPs? Oops! | Writing Update #1

With every single day, we get a little bit closer to November and NaNoWriMo and so I’ve been spending a lot more time thinking about, and actually writing, my different WIPs. So I thought that in the lead up to NaNo, I’d start talking about my writing a little more on here.

You might remember I did a post talking about my WIPs back in July, and well, there’s some stuff to update you on. In that post I talked about three different stories that I was working on, and now I have another three ideas I’m also working on so let’s get into talking about everything.

There’s Six of Them?

I know that six WIPs at once is a lot. But also, if you know me at all, you probably aren’t that surprised. As I told my dad this morning when we were talking about my writing, this is just who I am as a person. I have a million things going on in my brain at any one time—I read like 3-10 books at the one time, I’m always halfway through writing a hundred different posts and trying to complete a hundred other tasks. I’m not a ‘take it one step at a time’ kind of person. I’m a mood reader, but in all aspects of my life—I switch between writing things depending on my mood as much as I do reading.

This works for me, to a point. It means that I have the freedom to jump between things as and when I like, but it also means that I have a million things started that very rarely get finished. I know that probably makes a lot of people feel panicked, but I know I’ll eventually get things done.

So Wait, What Are You Actually Writing?

Right now my brain is very much feeling occupied with those three new ideas. I mean, who doesn’t love shiny new things right? Naturally though I’m at different stages with each of them. I’ll do another post updating on where all my WIPs are again in late October and I’ll explain more about these then, but for now we’re referring to them as ‘Contemporary, ‘Retelling’ and ‘Fantasy’.

With ‘Fantasy’, I basically have the names of my characters and the title and that’s about it. This is a reworked idea from another story I came up with years ago but in a completely different genre and feel to it. I have some vague ideas of some world-building stuff beyond that but nothing solid. I think I want to go the fae route on this one, so I’m taking my time to do some research on that.

I’ve started writing ‘Retelling’ but in a sort of pre-writing way. I don’t know the characters, plot or world well enough to real write but I played around with a few scenes to help work some of that out. It did give me an idea of the sort of thing I might like to explore so I’m hoping to take some time this week to note that down and work out how my characters would fit into that.

And finally, I’ve actually started work on ‘Contemporary’ and I’m happy with how far I’m in at the moment. I’ve written about 3,000 words but I’ve also been working on a character journal on the side. It’s been a really great way of getting to know my main character rather than just being like ‘well, she acts like this because she does’. Right now this is one I’m actively trying to get written.

Like I said as we get closer to November, I’ll be talking more and more about my writing and whatnot, but for today that’s the end of the post. I hope you’re all doing super well, and I’d love to hear about what you’re writing in the comments below!
