My Thoughts On Discworld So Far

This year I made it a goal of mine to work through the Discworld series and to participate in Turtle Recall. I’ve now read the first five books in the series, which seems like a good place to look back and take stock of things. So I’ll just be sharing my thoughts on each of the books today and then I’ll probably do another update in the New Year. So let’s get to it,

The Colour of Magic

Ahh, where it all began! I have to admit that my brain is a little foggy on this one because I read it in February of 2019 which honestly feels like a decade ago now. I mean, clearly I enjoyed it enough to continue with the rest of the series. In my little Goodreads review, I did write ‘I just love Rincewind and Twoflower’ and well, you’ll see whether that’s still the case in a bit. I also very helpfully wrote ‘More thoughts on this soon’ which as we all know is blogger-speak for ‘I’m never going to add anything more to this review’. So cheers for that one past Ely.

The Light Fantastic

This marks the start of where I’d started actually making sure to read the books. We’ve all been there—you say you’re going to read this series in February 2019 and then suddenly it’s May 2020 and you haven’t read past book one. All I really remember about this one is pure and utter chaos, which is very on brand for Pratchett, isn’t it?

Equal Rites

Equal Rites is by far my favourite of the series so far. I always connect better with female characters so that’s really no surprise to me. I absolutely love Granny Weatherwax and I can’t wait to read more of the Witches series. I honestly don’t know what else to say about this other than I absolutely loved it.

Mort

I also loved Mort. Death is just such an amazing great that he instantly makes any book or scene that he appears in like 10 times better. I think this is one of the most fun books, in terms of it has these great characters, this really interesting storyline and it’s filled with Pratchett’s usual wit. I can definitely see why this is so many people’s favourites and I have a feeling it’ll stay up there along with Equal Rites for me.

Sourcery

I just finished this one last night so at least it’s very clear in my mind. Honestly, though, this is my least favourite of the series so far. I’m feeling kind of over Rincewind as a character right now even though we had a few books without him. We’ve got a few more books in between his next one so maybe I’ll be interested again by then.

And that’s it for today. Like I said, I’ll hopefully remember to update you all in January but for now, I’ll catch you all again soon.

  1. Rincewind is not my cup of tea either. It is why I read them in the arcs with some rincewind sprinkled in between here and there instead of following the publication order.
